Roberta Hoover Ranney
I've had a life-long fascination with fabric and sewing by machine.
In 2004 I began creating art with fabric and thread. My work
tends to be representational and usually depicts the beauty I
find in the Missouri Ozarks. My favorite works have featured
a blue heron, a skunk, frogs and turtles, an owl, lizards and
dragonflies. I strive to capture a moment in time that you might
see in roaming the Ozarks. I also love to show the beauty of
the wildflowers found in the area. Intense free-motion quilting
gives my work a sense of movement and depth. I find the act
of creating my fiber art to be a joyful experience and I believe
that pleasure is reflected in my work.
I have no background or training in art.
The only art class I've had was that evil one you are required
to take in junior high school. That class proved to me that
I had no artistic ability so I made no further attempt to express
that part of myself for forty years. I'm sorry I missed all
those years of creativity but am happy that I've finally discovered
how to let it come out and play. I have learned to dye and paint
on fabric and am always ready to learn something new
My work has been juried into the finals of the International
Quilt Festival and into "In Full Bloom IV", a special
traveling exhibit of the IQF. It has also been published in
"The Quintessential Quilter", a publication of the
International Quilt Festival. I am a member of the International
Quilt Association, American Quilt Society and Studio Art Quilt
Associates. I graduated from Missouri State University and have
lived in the Springfield, Missouri area most of my life.
