A
MOMENT TO BREATHE
The drive must include
Music to make the trip
Feel like a vacation has begun.
New York City looms in the background
As smaller towns
Melt one into another.
ABBA blares from the CD player
To make 95 North
Bearable through
Connecticut's stop and go.
Entering Rhode Island and the body reacts
As if a boulder has been removed
From the small of my back.
The sign says Cape Cod to the right
And a smile falls across my face.
The windows are rolled down
As I start to smell the air
That says "welcome & relax."
The traffic sometimes intensifies
Upon the approach
To the Sagamore bridge,
But once I cross it,
My whole body releases,
My mind feels fresh
And I have found
A moment to breathe.

COMPLETION
You spend agonizing hours preparing.
The relentless research accomplished.
The creative process causing
Sleepless nights.
Thoughts flow through
Your mind until they
Collide into a gem.
The execution,
Fine tuned to your idea of perfection.
The culmination of everything,
Forming just the right mood,
Setting, and story.
You see the finish line
In the distance,
Progressing towards you
Like a momentous avalanche you can't keep at bay.
Then all at once
You are there.
Standing back to look,
Pride fills you like a
Warm cup of your favorite beverage.
The onlookers arrive,
Witnessing what you have achieved.
Then…
You notice one more thing
You wished you would have done.
One more tweak.
One more.

Gregory G. Allen is an author,
award winning composer and playwright living in New Jersey. His
love of writing started when he was young, having had his first
musical produced when he was only 14. He has gone on to have
several musicals produced on stage and samples of his writings
have been published in print and online. He is a member of the
