In The Blink Of An Eye

It was a Summer's night in 1967. It had turned dark, but Phillip and I were still playing at full speed; running in and out of the apartment buildings. Phillip had somehow acquired a pass key that opened every door in the complex and he and I would spend hours hanging out in the unoccupied units. None of them had the little chains left that were connected to the bathtub plugs. We would snip them off with cutters and use them for slingshot ammo.

I don't remember who saw it first, but as we walked through the parking lot towards my building, we saw what appeared to be a lighted blimp moving very slowly from our left to our right. It was on the other side of a line of trees behind my building. As we stared at this craft, it became evident that it wasn't a blimp. The lights moved from end to end which I had initially mistaken for lettering. I then realized that there was absolutely no sound and this thing was close. Both of us just stared as it slowly made it's way across the Summer sky. After a minute or so, Phillip ran to his apartment to get his Mother. When she came out and got a look, her first words were; "Good Lord, what is that thing?" The 3 of us then headed to my building where we could get a better view from my balcony.

My Mother and Father, 2 sisters and older brother were all home. Other than my younger sister, they were all much older. I just directed them all to the balcony and the 8 of us watched in silence as this cigar-shaped lighted craft glided slowly closer to us; coming in at an angle from left to right. We watched for at least 2 or 3 minutes. No-one spoke during these surreal, brief moments. It reached a point where it was almost directly in front of us, at approximately the altitude of a low flying helicopter, maybe a 1/2 mile away when the most incredible thing happened. I felt as if it saw us looking at it. It stopped for a few seconds and then shot off in the direction it came from at a speed that was impossible. It was literally out of view in less than a second; in the blink of an eye.

My Father; a very conservative, common sense sort, never spoke of the incident again. As a matter of fact, only my brother Jerry and I have ever brought it up and that was a very brief conversation. I've never written about the incident in detail until now. I had pretty much shelved the memory until one day very recently.

I was viewing a special on UFO's on the Sci-Fi Channel, when I saw it again...the same UFO I witnessed in 1967 was captured on film by 2 German citizens gliding through the skies of Germany. Forty years later I recognized it instantly. The same lights, the same shape, the same movement. I sat down and caught my breath as the details of that night came flooding back as if a switch had been turned on. In the blink of an eye I was there again.

VISITOR

It came upon us like a dream
just there
two kids laughing in the dark
now joined by a visitor
a silent visitor
gliding it seemed against a quiet night
eyeing us I felt
encircled by odd lights
hypnotic lights
it moved behind the trees
and we moved to follow
it rose again into view
ever so slowly
fluidly
left to right into the open sky
the visitor paused ever so briefly
then left us
silently
gone from the starlit frame
within the blink of a child's eye
