Vision
Hindsight is twenty-twenty
We imperturbably say
But what is insightful vision
When life is looking the opposite way
Would words of wisdom
Record a different story
If life could be lived in reverse
Returning to familiar territory
Undoing the "what's done is done" ancient curse
Receiving before it is given
Understanding pain, from where and why it came
With the warmth of forgiveness
Preceding the cold, hard rain
There would be no secrets
Truth before deceit
Victory would lie before us
And the battles of defeat
We would know how long life's journey
Upon this earth would last
The alpha would be the omega
The future in the past
Stumbling through our youth
Before we learn to crawl
Humbly returning to our mother's bosom
The safest place of all
And with our birth's reversal
The beginning now the end
All abortions would be aborted
Atonement for unforgiving sin
No memories for remembrance
All would disappear
Having made a contribution
To making life's future hindsight
Crystal twenty-twenty clear
But there is at least one downside
To this whimsical change
The garbage truck
Would no longer make pick-ups
Just deliveries
In sunshine or rain

A
Steakhouse-Lighthouse Dogma
Hi, my name is Ashley
I will be your server tonight
She joyfully announced
Putting a name with a face
No longer a stranger
Is this your first time
To dine with us
Are you from our town, she asked
Rhythmically breaking the iceberg salad
Opening the conversational menu
Of excerpted dialogue
Safe passage for the cuisine cruise
I looked past her
Over her shoulder
At the painting
Splashed against the wall
A ship, a friendless vessel
Callously tossed
On a turbulent sea
And I pondered its fate
Wrought by the blended colors
Of dark blue and gray
Converging on a garnished voyage
Fixed on a canvass
And framed in the foreground
Of a calming voice
With beacon-like words
Hypnotically guiding me through
The harbor of choices
Of one hundred percent Angus beef
And lemon-peppered salmon
Rising from beneath
The waves of the day
