The
Poetry Of Terry McDermott
My
Tribute to Coleridge and the Ancient Mariner
From the ship he shot the great albatross,
His purpose for this we will never know.
But his mistake his shipmate's life lost,
Yet he was cursed to journey to and fro.
Telling of the strange tragedy at sea,
Miles from his home in land of crystal ice.
A sin committed his life never free,
He transformed to become wise and nice.
This epic they say if full of symbol,
Like when Adam ate from the sinner's tree.
When we think of our sins we should tremble,
Yet we can be spared by the savior's creed.
The old mariner journeyed on a great quest,
And touched the heart of a wedding guest.
This sonnet is a tribute to Samuel Coleridge,
the poet who wrote
"Rhime of the Ancient Mariner." My favorite poem.

The Adventures of Derek the Red
One
Tulip Stone
The Black Stallion
Along
With his shiny sword
And
The helmet with the horns
Was the payment required to own a tulip stone
Derek smiled
He was now a happy man
Walking away from the village
One red tulip
Filled his once empty heart
Villagers watched as Derek reached into the tulip
Taking the shiny stone he never turned his back
The only thing in life Derek ever wished for
One tulip stone
This concludes the Derek the Red Series.

The Adventures of the Human Cardinal
The
Human Cardinal
Human Cardinal
Spreading out his bright red wings
Defending pure peace
Hero of us all
Fighting those evil creatures
From deep outer space
Blue Tornado Boy
His faithful sidekick nephew
Speeding at his side
Champion of Earth
Coming out of the future
Human Cardinal
This is a form know as Senryu, which
is a Haiku without the mention of seasons.

Benny
the Bat
Benny the Bat
Within the deep dark galaxy
A green lights appears
He is the tiny watchman
Benny the Bat
When danger is spotted
He tells Human Cardinal
Who always plays chess
With Blue Tornado Boy
Never part of the action
But full of wisecracks
That the others ignore
In truth he is wise
Human Cardinal boasts
Blue Tornado Boy nods away
Benny will roll his eyes
Saying Oh! Brother!
Often comical
But his job is not
The little bright light
Benny the Bat.
This was done in the naani form.

Uncle
Pluto's Orange Soda
The drink of the galaxy
Made with fruits
From many worlds
Superheroes just love it
Here are just a few
Human Cardinal
Blue Tornado Boy
And Benny the Bat
Fly to any space station
And tell the clerk
You want the great taste of
Uncle Pluto's Orange Soda
Also done in the naani form.
Author's Note: My last three
poems introduce the cast of a series of poems "The Adventures
of the Human Cardinal." I call it comic strip poetry, in
an attempt to show children that poetry can be fun. Some readers
may remember Benny the Bat from the Icy the Bat poems.
Now you know some of the cast
and their favorite drink. Their Adventures are coming next month.
