A Peek at the Past

I received an e-mail the other day comparing children growing up today to children raised in the 50's and 60's. I was fascinated at the incredible differences. The sad thing is that with all the gadgets and gizmos that kids are afforded these days, they just don't realize what they're missing.

That email made me think about a few of the things we did as children to pass the time.

In the Summer, or on the week-ends, the plan was that you met your buddies at the corner right after breakfast. Oh yes, the entire family had breakfast at the same time. You and the fellas would play until dark and even that never seemed to be enough time. It seems we were always trying to get enough kids together to play a baseball game on the nearest field. If that didn't work out, we'd go to the creek and catch frogs and tadpoles.

We also spent a lot of time listening to the top 40 or the afternoon baseball game (when the Senators were playing) on our little transistor radios. Many hours were spent just playing hide and seek in the nearby woods. I even remember collecting pop bottles and turning them in for candy or a Sweet 16 soda and waiting for the Good Humor man to ride through our neighborhood.

If you were really creative you could build your own street cart out of wood and roller skates and we were always on hand to run to the store for our neighbor in hopes of being rewarded with a dime or maybe even 15 cents. We'd race to the corner store when the school bell rang to buy Beatle cards or race home to build realistic battlefields in the backyard - complete with army men, jeeps and tanks.

These are a just a few of the things I remember doing when I was a kid. Today most kids listen to their I-pods or watch television…a lot! They E-mail each other or play computer games when they're not playing video games on the TV screen or some hand-held gizmo.

Too many children these days are out of shape, spoiled, bored and irritable. They're raised on terrible music and terrible television that they're force-fed by a music industry now devoid of originality and creativeness and by Disney® who churns out one unrealistic kids show after another on that horrible channel of theirs. A channel that I am very close to banning my 11 year old from watching. Talk about a vast wasteland!

Is it just me?!

Why not take your kids to a park!? Go fly a kite with them! Take them to a baseball game…the beach. Or, if you want to go all out, take them fishing!

This has been an announcement from the past. A place worth visiting from time to time.
